Man indicted in robbery, murder of 70-year-old vet

A Buffalo man has been charged in the fatal March 28 shooting and robbery of a 70-year-old man in the victim’s East Side home.

Andre Johnson, 20, of Wilson Street, was indicted last week on two counts of second-degree murder and one count of first-degree robbery in the attack on Robert C. Bennett Sr. in his C Street home in the Fillmore-Sycamore neighborhood, according to Erie County District Attorney Frank A. Sedita III.

Johnson was arrested June 3 and is in custody. He will be arraigned at 9:30 a.m. Thursday before State Supreme Court Justice M. William Boller.

Bennett was found dead in his house March 29, after a next-door relative had looked in a window and noticed he was on a couch, then, hours later, looked in again, and realized Bennett had not moved, according to police and family members.

After Bennett’s body was found, his son, Robert C. Bennett Jr., told The Buffalo News his father served multiple tours of duty in Vietnam during the 1960s and early 1970s, only to be shot and killed inside his own residence.
