TOWN OF NIAGARA – In the closing hours of the State Legislature session last week, both houses passed a bill sought by the Town of Niagara, allowing it to sell a former park site on Young Street.

The 3.6-acre parcel hasn’t been used as a park for about 10 years. The town would like to sell it to CBI Express, a shipping company, which plans to build a new facility there employing about 25 people. The business would move from its current location on Military Road.

Young Street Park once had a ball diamond and a playground, but the sponsors of the bill, State Sen. George D. Maziarz and Assemblyman John D. Ceretto, argued that the town’s new 126-acre Veterans Memorial Park more than makes up for the closure of the older, smaller park.

The bill passed the Senate Tuesday by a vote of 49-8, and the Assembly followed suit Thursday.
