Niagara Health Dept. gets perfect score for emergency preparedness

LOCKPORT – The Niagara County Health Department announced Friday that the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have granted its Cities Readiness Initiative a perfect grade.

It’s not unusual, as according to Public health Director Daniel J. Stapleton, this is the fifth consecutive state or federal review that has given the county a 100 percent score.

The CDC could think of no recommendations for improvement after reviewing the county’s plan for a large-scale emergency outbreak requiring a medical response within 48 hours. The program requires annual exercises and technical reviews.

The CDC said Niagara County’s work “is a model for other jurisdictions.” The federal agency saluted the county for its “forward thinking” in going beyond plans that require medical shipments from the Strategic National Stockpile.
