Lancaster woman dies from wounds in Chautauqua County shooting

A 29-year-old Lancaster woman who authorities say was shot by her boyfriend – shortly before he turned the gun on himself – has died, Chautauqua County Sheriff Joseph A. Gerace said Saturday.

Nicole M. Sheehan died Friday afternoon, one day after she was shot in the head.

Chautauqua County sheriff’s officials have said they believe her boyfriend, Sam H. Reynolds, 38, shot her while the couple was on a trip to celebrate her birthday.

Sheehan was taken to University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Hamot in Erie, Pa.

She was not able to speak to sheriff’s investigators, Gerace said.

Deputies have conducted interviews with friends and family members of Sheehan and Reynolds, but investigators still don’t know why Reynolds shot his girlfriend and, hours later, killed himself.

“We may never have that answer,” Gerace said. “We can only speculate what went on.”

Reynolds and Sheehan traveled from Lancaster to the Barcelona area of Westfield to celebrate Sheehan’s birthday, which was Tuesday. The couple rented one side of a duplex on Route 5.

The Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call at about 2:30 a.m. Thursday from a neighbor who reported Sheehan showed up next door with a gunshot wound to the head. Sheehan was taken to Westfield Memorial Hospital and later to Hamot.

A search began when investigators learned Reynolds was still in the area. The manhunt lasted for about two hours as deputies and police searched near Barcelona beach and marina, and then they heard a gunshot near the breakwater. They found Reynolds’ body and the handgun on the beach, just north of the marina, the sheriff said.
