Two Buffalo men were charged Friday in the alleged firebombing of the WNY Property Contractors building in Riverside on June 13.
Ryan Smolinski, 26, and Lowell Carey, 53, were charged each with maliciously damaging a building used in interstate commerce, and conspiracy and unlawful possession of unregistered firearms – federal charges.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Edward H. White said a building surveillance camera showed Smolinski and Carey placing a Molotov cocktail under a garage door at the side of the building at 349 Ontario St. and throwing another Molotov cocktail on the roof of the building. Damage was estimated at $5,000.
Arraigned before U.S. Magistrate Judge Jeremiah J. McCarthy, Smolinski was released on bail and Carey was remanded pending a detention hearing next week. U.S. Attorney William J. Hochul, Jr., said the case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, firearms and Explosives and the Buffalo Fire Department.
