Free Kids Fishing Derby planned in Tonawanda

The 19th annual free Kids Fishing Derby will take place from 9 a.m. to noon June 21, with registration beginning at 8 a.m. in the Niawanda Park Bandshell in Tonawanda.

Grab bags will be distributed to the first 200 kids registered and more than $5,000 in prizes and giveaways are promised. Free bait will be provided – 2,000 worms have been donated by Big Catch/Gander Mountain. Grand prizes have been donated by Niagara Outdoors, Triple S Sporting Goods, Rapala and Confer Plastics.

A first-place prize will be awarded for each age group for the largest fish caught and the awards ceremony is slated for 11:30 a.m.

The age groups are as follows: age 7 and younger; 8-10-year-olds; 11-13 year-olds; 14-16 year-olds. Those age 16 must have a fishing license. Children younger than 10 must be accompanied by an adult.

Kids five and younger can visit the “Tackle Box” for coloring fun. Refreshments will be available from the Boy Scouts. A casting contest will be provided by the Friends of the Fishing Derby.

The event is sponsored by the Exchange Club, Elks Lodge and White’s Turf Crew, with the support from the City of Tonawanda Parks and Recreation Department.
