MAYVILLE – A new alliance group to oversee issues affecting Chautauqua Lake was proposed to members of the Planning and Economic Development Committee meeting Wednesday in Mayville.

The proposal to create the non-profit Chautauqua Lake Watershed Management Alliance (CLWMA) involves seeking grants and researching issues for the preservation of the lake and surroundings. Chautauqua County funding would be used to launch the independent agency, with the long-range goal to apply for grants for programs to enhance and preserve the lake.

Mark Geise, director of the Chautauqua County Planning Department, said the group will prepare a resolution for the July meeting of the Legislature to fund the project.

Members of the Planning and Economic Development Committee also authorized $35,000 for the Dunkirk Lighthouse and Veterans Museum after learning that the home connected to the historic lighthouse is in need of a roof and other work. The funding will come from the county’s occupancy tax fund. The issue will be presented during Wednesday’s meeting of the County Legislature.

The lighthouse dates to 1826 and the home is used for a museum of U.S. military artifacts. Committee members are concerned the roof leaks could jeopardize the collection.
