A move to split off Lake Shore Health Care Center in Irving from Brooks Memorial Hospital in Dunkirk should boost efforts to keep the financially troubled Irving hospital open, Lake Shore administrators said late Wednesday afternoon.

Lake Shore administrators said in a statement that their next steps will include withdrawing closure plans for the hospital, holding more indepth discussions with potential buyers and appointing several new members to the board of hospital operator TLC Health Network.

The Lake Shore executives were responding to Tuesday’s announcement that the board of directors of the parent institution that jointly governed the two Chautauqua County hospitals wants the hospitals to make independent decisions about their futures.

That institution, the Lake Erie Regional Health System of New York, had announced in October it planned to close Lake Shore hospital.
