West Side boat finishes 18th in nationals

Three West Side Rowing Club seniors ended their high school careers Sunday in memorable fashion at the US Rowing Youth National Championships in Sacramento, Calif.

The Junior Women Youth Four with coxswain – with seniors Emily Radziwon (Orchard Park), Ashley Johnson (Clarence) and Emily Evans (City Honors) – finished 18th. Kendal Smith (Park) and coxswain Claire Conrad (Buffalo Seminary) rounded out the crew.

The West Siders, coached by Justin Farrington, qualified for the event by finishing first in the New York State Scholastic Rowing Championships last month.

The event featured 133 clubs from 26 states across the country. West Side Rowing Club was the only team from Western New York to qualify.

All three of the crew’s seniors will continue their rowing in college on Division I scholarships.

Radziwon will row for Clemson, Evans will attend Columbia and Johnson will go on to Syracuse.
