Water leak stopped at Lockport ice rink site

LOCKPORT – Water stopped flooding into the foundation of the city’s new ice arena Monday evening, as two nearby water mains were shut off. Mayor Anne E. McCaffrey said one is the source of the flooding, and the answer should be determined Tuesday.

McCaffrey said mains on Market Street between Main and Union streets and Union Street between Washburn and Market streets were turned off, and the water stopped. Meanwhile, the construction crew installed drain tile and dug a well pit Monday to direct the flow into a storm sewer.

Corporation Counsel John J. Ottaviano, the president of the arena group, said the problem has cost the arena about $30,000 in extra materials, such as stone and the drain tile to protect the foundation of the twin-rink complex. Ottaviano said the leak may cause a delay of about a week in its scheduled mid-September opening.
