Lockport rink installs drain tile as leak continues

LOCKPORT – As the saga of the broken water line at the new Lockport ice arena entered its second week Monday, the construction crew installed drain tile and dug a well pit to direct the flow into a storm sewer.

Corporation Counsel John J. Ottaviano, the president of the arena group, said the problem has cost the arena about $30,000 in extra materials, such as stone and the drain tile to protect the foundation of the twin-rink complex. Ottaviano said the leak, whose source has still not been discovered by city crews, may cause a delay of about a week in the scheduled mid-September opening of the $13 million Chestnut Street complex.

The city brought in a new $30,000 leak detector which has so far failed to locate the broken pipe flooding the foundation of the arena.
