On-line fund raiser seeks money for West Seneca ‘90 grad

An online fundraiser began Thursday with high hopes of collecting $90,000 for a 42-year-old former West Seneca woman in need of alternative treatment for Stage 4 breast cancer.

By Saturday, more than half of the $90,000 goal had been raised, and organizers felt inspired to spread the word in her hometown, hoping the outpouring of generosity would continue at the same pace once people here got the word that Monet Caputy Armenia is in need of assistance.

A mother of two young boys living with her husband, Joe Armenia, in South Orange, N.J., Caputy Armenia has been battling breast cancer for six years and her cancer recently spread to her spine and brain, necessitating a new approach to try and halt the disease.

“It is a testament to her spirit and the love Monet has for so many people, especially her two young sons, that there has been this outpouring of support for a fundraiser that started on Thursday,” said Aimee Molloy, also a former West Seneca resident and close friend of Monet. Caputy Armenia and Molloy are members of the 1990 graduating class of West Seneca East High School, and in 1999 they moved together to Manhattan to advance their careers. Molloy is a published author and Caputy Armenia worked in real estate development.

When her medical condition worsened two years ago, she gave up her career to focus on recovery and spend more time with her sons, Aidan, 9, and Jackson, 7.

If the fund drive succeeds, Caputy Armenia plans to begin the alternative treatment in New York City and in time travel to Europe where the advanced portion of the treatment regimen is available. That element of the treatment has yet to be approved in the United States and is not covered by health insurance.

“There is a high success rate with this alternative treatment,” said Molloy, the daughter of John J. Molloy, a prominent Buffalo defense attorney.
