Cheektowaga’s 4x800 relay wins national title

Add a national championship to the list for the Cheektowaga relay time.

The boys’ 4x800 team won the Emerging Elite Division at the New Balance National High School Championships in Greensboro, N.C.

The team of Kobe Walenka, Jack Behlmaier, Noah McGhee and Tim Whelan won in 7:53.13.

This comes after the quarter won the ECIC, Section VI and New York State titles.

“This time was about a second off what they ran at the state level last weekend,” said Cheektowaga coach Ken McCracken, who was with the team along with coach Rich Bridenbaker.

“That was just an epic time we ran to win the state title. We didn’t have a chance to grasp the reality of it getting ready to come down here.

“We knew we would be in the mix but we weren’t sure how we’d do. We’ve never been to this level of track event before. These four kids invested multiple years into the program and the result, the reward, was phenomenal.”

Behlmaier was also a member of the 4x200 team that placed fifth overall in the Emerging Elite Division. Along with Lucas Chojnicki, Kenny Dillenburg and Naeem Shah the team set the school record with a time of 1:30.64.

Also at the national meet is thrower Stephanie Lombardo who finished 17th in the discus and will compete in the shot put today.

Sweet Home had ninth-graders compete in the Freshman Mile in the Championship Division.

Sam Peterman ran a 5:08.60 to place third in the girls event while Chris Nowak rank a 4:27.95 to finish fourth in the boys.
