UB student injured in crash near North Campus dies at ECMC

A University at Buffalo student from Brooklyn who was struck by a car during a chain-reaction crash near the North Campus died Saturday morning in Erie County Medical Center, Amherst police said.

Yu Hua Qiu, 18, suffered a severe head injury after being hit by a car at about 4 p.m. Friday as she crossed Millersport Highway at Flint Road. She was taken initially to nearby Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital, then flown by Mercy Flight to the Buffalo trauma hospital.

Four vehicles were involved in the crash. Police said a pickup pulling a trailer driven by Daniel Kepple, 48, of Buffalo hit a car driven by Aujonee Smith, 20, of Amherst. The car spun around in the middle of the intersection, striking the UB student, police said. The crash also involved cars driven by Rebecca Jo Reyes, 26, of Michigan, and Dana Cave, 27, of the Town of Tonawanda, police added

Both Reyes and her passenger, Sandra Mohn, 56, of Amherst, were treated in Millard Fillmore Suburban for non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Amherst police are continuing an investigation. Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to contact police at 689-1311.
