Road washed out on border of Alden and Bennington

The flood waters begann to recede Friday afternoon in the Town of Alden, following intense rainshowers from the night before, according to a spokesman for Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz.

Spokesman Peter Anderson said the county’s Department of Public Works has been in contact with officials in the Alden School District, where the flood made roads impassable for buses transporting children to school.

“The issue was 3 inches of water on North Road between County Line Road and Crittenden (Road),” Anderson said. “It was a localized thing. Crews were around the scene just to make sure that other unsuspecting motorists didn’t hit the three inches of water at speed.”

The Alden School District transportation director said it was the first time in several years that such a volume of water had flowed across the road, Anderson added.

Meteorologist David Zaff of the National Weather Service in Cheektowaga said between 2 to 5 inches of rainfall was recorded in parts of Erie, Wyoming and Cattaraugus counties. Much of the flooding reported in the Town of Bennington in Wyoming County, just east Alden in Erie County.
