Batavia Daily News sells its building

BATAVIA – The Daily News has sold the building it erected more than 45 years ago to a neighbor but will remain as a tenant in the industrial park.

The newspaper’s pressroom and a warehouse have been empty for several years and the 10,200-circulation paper is now printed by The Buffalo News. When the paper lost its contract as one of the printers of USA Today, it decided to sell its presses.

In the mid-1980s the family-owned paper was sold to Johnson Newspaper Corporation of Watertown.

The new owner of the building is 9 Apollo Drive Inc., a neighbor in the industrial park whose Fontrick Door manufactures custom doors and windows. It will use a high-ceiling pressroom and adjoining warehouse to expand its business, adding 11 jobs to its staff of 25.

The sale price was $750,000 and the News will become a tenant, an unusual role in its 136-year history.
