Hamburg Library thanks community with ground breaking picnic

Work has already started on the $2.6 million Hamburg Public Library project, but the library will hold a ground breaking picnic at 4 p.m. today with music and free food, as well as a basket raffle.

“It is exciting and heartwarming to see the community rally around this project. People are buying bricks, sending in donations, and thanking us for building this for Hamburg. But, in reality, this ground breaking picnic is our way of thanking them,” said Library Director Jack Edson.

The $2.6 million project will add 6,600 square feet to the library on Buffalo Street. The project is being funded through the New York State Public Library Construction Grant Program, the Town of Hamburg, and donors.

The construction schedule calls for the library to close temporarily beginning Monday, with the expected reopening June 23. The Lake Shore Public Library, 4857 Lake Shore Road, will have extended its hours during that week. For information, call the Lake Shore Library 627-3017.
