MEDINA – The network that operates Medina Memorial Hospital and related health care facilities in Orleans and Genesee counties has reached an affiliation agreement with Catholic Health System, officials announced Tuesday.
Orleans CommunityHealth leaders hope the agreement will allow the system to continue providing high-quality health care services in its home market while offering its patients better access to specialists and advanced treatments.
The deal is the latest local example of a small, independent hospital turning to a larger system in Buffalo or Rochester for financial or administrative aid.
Catholic Health reached similar agreements in 2011 with Bertrand Chaffee Hospital in Springville and in April with Mount St. Mary’s Hospital in Lewiston. United Memorial Medical Center in Batavia, WCA Hospital in Jamestown, Jones Memorial Hospital in Wellsville and Wyoming County Community Health System in Warsaw have their own affiliations with larger hospital systems.
Orleans Community Health and Medina Memorial considered several potential partners before deciding to partner with Catholic Health.
Catholic Health will help the Medina hospital operate more efficiently and recruit physicians, and a cardiac specialist from the larger system may boost cardiology services at the rural hospital.
In addition to Medina Memorial, Orleans Community Health includes Orleans Community Health Center in Albion and various inpatient, outpatient and longterm-care services in Medina and Batavia.
