Bisons rally to top Chiefs, 8-4

SYRACUSE – The Buffalo Bisons had an 8-4 come-from-behind victory to reflect on during a rare day off today before beginning a four-game International League series in Toledo Thursday against the Mud Hens (Radio 1520, 7:05 p.m.).

Bisons starter Deck McGuire (3-0) was touched for three first-inning runs by the Chiefs in Tuesday morning’s game, but McGuire and three relievers allowed only one run the rest of the way. That was a solo homer in the bottom of the fourth by Brian Goodwin that made it 4-1.

The Herd erased that deficit when Kenny Wilson hit a two-run triple in the fifth and a leadoff homer by Jared Goedert and a triple by Munenori Kawasaki with Dan Johnson aboard in the sixth made it 5-4.

Mike Nickeas hit a two-run homer with Kawasaki on base in the Herd’s three-run eighth inning.

It was the fourth win in the last six games for the Bisons after they had gone through a 1-8 stretch, and it brought them back to the .500 for the season (31-31). The Herd is 4½ games behind first-place Syracuse in the IL’s North Division standings.

McGuire lasted five full innings in his fourth career Triple A start. He struck out three and walked two. Two of the six hits he allowed were solo homers – one by Goodwin and the other by Zach Walters that began the Chiefs’ three-run first inning.

Esmil Rogers, John Stilson and Bobby Korecky shut out the Chiefs over the last four innings.

Seven of Buffalo’s hits went for extra bases, including the homers by Johnson (No. 14), Goedert and Nickeas.

Lefty Sean Nolin (2-2, 2.70) is scheduled to start for Buffalo in the series opener in Toledo. The Mud Hens’ starter is yet to be named.
