Lockport community gardens invite children to plant

LOCKPORT – Lockport’s two community gardens will hold a free Kids Day from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday.

The gardens are located at Washburn Street and Elmwood Avenue and at Ontario and Hawley streets.

Richard Tedeschi, executive director of Imagine Community Gardens, said any child from the neighborhoods around the gardens is invited to pick a flower pot from a supply that will be available, fill it with soil and choose some flowers to plant in it. The pots can then be taken home and placed on the child’s front porch.

A master gardener will be on hand to offer tips on organic gardening and caring for plants. The two gardens are used primarily to grow vegetables for nearby residents.

Tedeschi said the promotion started last year at the Washburn Street location. He credited Mayor Anne E. McCaffrey for coming up with the idea.
