Lockport applies for $3 million in locks funding

LOCKPORT – The Common Council voted Monday to seek $3 million in state funding to restore two more of the Flight of Five 19th century Erie Canal locks.

“The goal here is to get it listed as one of Western New York’s priority projects as the (Lockport) hockey arena was last year,” said R. Charles Bell, director of planning and development.

Locks 69 and 70, the middle lock and the one second from the top, are to be reopened to working condition in July or August. Bell said the new grant seeks funding to restore Lock 71, the top lock, and Lock 68, the second from the bottom of the five stairstep locks.

Also at Monday’s special meeting, the Council endorsed a $250,000 application from Lockport Main Street Inc. for state funding for improvements to downtown business buildings. Owners would have to cover 25 percent of the cost of their projects if the effort for state funding succeeds for a second time. A 2011 grant of $251,300 upgraded seven buildings.
