Registration closes this week for “Summer in the Center,” a career camp for middle school children presented by Erie Community College and Erie 1 BOCES.

Camp will be held the week of July 28 at Erie 1 BOCES Harkness Career & Technical Center, 99 Aero Drive, Cheektowaga. It runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily and the cost is $200 for the week.

Campers chose four courses from options that ranges from animal exploration to video game design.

This week:

• A household hazardous waste drop-off day is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Erie Community College’s South Campus in Orchard Park. Enter the site from Big Tree Road/Route 20A. No tires, latex paint, fluorescent light bulbs, computers, appliances or commercial/industrial wastes will be accepted.

• The casino at Sprague Brook Park in the Town of Concord is the meeting place Saturday for “A Walk in the Park,” a free, guided walk sponsored by Erie County’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Forestry, and Wellness Institute of Greater Buffalo and Western New York. The walk begins at 9:40 a.m. Enter the park from Foote Road, off Route 240. Health screenings and myriad information also will be available.

• A Home Energy Assistance Program [HEAP] Cooling Assistance Program has been opened by the county’s Department of Social Services. Under the federally-funded program, eligible households will receive installation of one window air conditioner. Call the HEAP Application Request Line at 858-1969 for an application package.
