Tourism workers to take tours

Workers in the hospitality and tourism fields in Niagara County are getting a free chance to learn more about the places tourists visit when they come to town.

The Niagara Tourism & Convention Corp. will hold “Get to Know Niagara USA” familiarization tours this month, an attempt to strengthen the understanding of those who interact with visitors on a day-to-day basis of the variety of offerings that are available.

“At the NTCC, we do our part in marketing and selling Niagara USA to potential visitors, but once they are here, it’s the job of the people – the employees – that dictate the experience that they have,” Lana Perlman, director of visitor services at the NTCC, said in a written statement. “Educating them about our product is just one way to influence that.”

The first tour, scheduled for Thursday, will visit the Niagara Power Vista, Our Lady of Fatima Shrine, the Village of Lewiston, Old Fort Niagara, Olcott Beach Carousel Park and the Winery at Marjim Manor.

The second tour, scheduled to be held June 17, will visit the Herschell Carrousel Factory Museum, the Riviera Theatre and Performing Arts Center, the Kenan Center, Lockport Locks & Erie Canal Cruises, the Erie Canal Discovery Center, Lockport Cave & Underground Boat Ride and the Flight of Five Winery.

The tours will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Those in the tourism and hospitality industries who want to attend both tours are welcome, organizers said.

Tour participants also will be able to visit the Maid of the Mist and the Cave of the Winds in Niagara Falls State Park, which would extend the tours until 7 p.m.

Tours will depart form the Aquarium of Niagara. Those wishing to taste wine at either of the wineries must bring a valid driver’s license.
