Limiting carbon pollution is an important first step

Regarding the recent article in The News, “EPA seeks to cut power plant carbon by 30 percent,” limiting carbon pollution is critical.

Taking action against global warming is important to me because of the impacts it could have on the Great Lakes; especially Lake Ontario and Lake Erie, where I spend my summer days swimming and relaxing on the beach. Global warming could increase the temperature of our lakes, resulting in less suitable habitats for cold water fish, and more suitable habitats for invasive species and algal blooms. The National Climate Assessment recognized today’s impacts with the statement, “Climate change, once considered an issue for a distant future, has moved firmly into the present.”

Power plants are the single largest sources of carbon pollution in the country. The Environmental Protection Agency’s proposal, once finalized, will be the largest step the United States has ever taken to combat global warming, and it’s our best chance to give our children a legacy we can be proud of.

I’ll be counting on Gov. Andrew Cuomo to do everything he can to seize this opportunity to limit carbon pollution by supporting President Obama in implementing these first-ever limits on carbon pollution from power plants.
