Leading local pediatric cancer doctor retiring

One of Buffalo’s leading cancer doctors will retire at the end of the month.

Dr. Martin Brecher began treating pediatric cancer patients at Roswell Park Cancer Institute in 1975 and will leave his clinical practices June 30, while continuing to provide some part-time support in his administrative posts.

Brecher, 67, of Amherst, has been chairman of pediatrics at Roswell and chief of the Division of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology at Women & Children’s Hospital since 1990.

“I have had the pleasure of working with so many incredible kids and their families,” said Brecher, who was featured in February in a WNY Refresh “In the Field” story. “I never cease to be amazed by the strength, courage and resilience of our young patients. They have taught me a great deal about what things are truly important in life. It has been a real privilege to have had the opportunity to be a part of their lives.”

Current and past patients and their families, colleagues and others are invited to celebrate his contributions to regional health care during a reception at 5 p.m. June 18 in Kaminski Park & Gardens at Roswell Park.

For more information, visit roswellpark.org/calendar/retirement-celebration-dr-martin-brecher.

The reception is free although gifts will accepted in Brecher’s honor to support the new pediatric hematology/oncology inpatient unit at John R. Oishei Children’s Hospital and the new pediatric hematology/oncology outpatient center at Roswell Park. The event is being coordinated jointly by Roswell Park, Women & Children’s Hospital and UBMD Pediatrics.

To RSVP, call 845-8788 or email Joanne.Glose@RoswellPark.org. Patients and families who have photographs of them with Brecher are invited to submit them to be featured during the celebration. To do so, email theresa.carbone@roswellpark.org.
