Depew driver charged with aggravated DWI

A 63-year-old driver pulled over Thursday night for passing a red light in the Town of Elma was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated, according to State Police.

A trooper pulled over a gray Kia on Transit Road around 11:20 p.m. The driver, Edward J. Renkas of Depew, appeared to be intoxicated and failed roadside sobriety tests, police said. The trooper also observed an open alcoholic beverage in the vehicle, police said.

A breath test indicated Renkas’ blood-alcohol content was 0.20 percent, police said.

He was charged with aggravated DWI because his BAC reading was over 0.18 percent, passing a red light and consumption of alcohol in a motor vehicle. Renkas was issued tickets to appear in Elma Town Court.
