ECMC reportedly suspends some kidney transplants

Erie County Medical Center has temporarily suspended all kidney transplants from living donors following the death of a donor, hospital officials were quoted as saying on Tuesday.

The program is being reviewed, according to broadcast reports, and transplants may resume in about six weeks. The reports added that hospital officials have notified all potential living donors and recipients of the action. Transplants from deceased donors were said to not be affected.

WGRZ and WIVB television news broadcasts reported that hospital officials said the move was prompted by the death of a donor who had provided a kidney to a family member in spring 2013, then died from an overdose of illegal drugs six months later.

WIVB reported, “ECMC proactively decided to temporarily suspend living donor recoveries. The ECMC transplant program otherwise continues unaffected and ECMC fully expects that the living donor program will be reinstated by mid-July.”
