New EPA Rules

BATAVIA – New oversight proposed for the Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean Waters Act will add regulatory burdens on farms and could affect governments and individuals, according to Genesee County legislator Shelley M. Stein and highway superintendent Timothy J. Hens.

The County Legislature agreed and recently passed a resolution opposing the changes.

Stein, the legislator from LeRoy and a dairy farm operator, called the rules that add ponds, ditches, season streams and drainage swales for EPA oversight, “overreach.” Hens said it could affect the county’s numerous drainage ditches as well as a property owner who wanted or needed a ditch.

EPA does not need Congressional approval but Rep. Chris Collins, R-Clarence, after visiting the Stein farm began efforts to halt the revisions.
