Nicholas A. Pierino, partner in law firm

Nicholas Anthony Pierino, of Buffalo, a lawyer whose career spanned more than 60 years, died Wednesday in Buffalo General Medical Center. He was 89.

Born in Buffalo, he was a 1942 graduate of Lafayette High School and studied physics and engineering at Canisius College, where he was a member of the 1943-44 basketball team that played in the National Invitational Tournament.

Drafted into the Army in 1944, he trained as a combat engineer and was stationed in the Philippines at the end of World War II. He attained the rank of sergeant and was assigned to the Quartermaster Corps. Returning from service, he completed has studies at Canisius, then attended the University of Buffalo Law School.

After passing the bar exam, he initially worked in general practice with Joseph Runfola, then became a partner in the firm Pierino and Rossetti.

Mr. Pierino was a member of the Knights of Columbus, where he played handball into his late 80s. He also was an avid golfer and a longtime member of the Lancaster Country Club.

Survivors include a sister, Rosaria “Sara,” and a brother, Thomas.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9 a.m. today in St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church, 200 St. Gregory Court at Maple Road, Amherst.
