Letters for June 1

Watkins deal could pay big dividends

At first I wondered what the Bills were doing when they gave up next year’s first and fourth round draft picks for Sammy Watkins. But the more I thought about it, I realized the last time we had a difference-maker at wideout was Andre Reed. Of course the jury is still out, but Watkins could be a top five receiver in the NFL within three years. In that case the deal becomes a bargain.

The draft also produced depth at LB, CB and most importantly the O-line. They Cy brothers (Cyrus Kouandjio and Cyril Richardson) should be mainstays on the right side of the line for the next ten years. With all of this offensive help, EJ Manual should begin to blossom this year. To the naysayers out there, give him a break. He’s only played 10 games in his NFL career. Did you forget that Peyton Manning had 28 interceptions and 3-13 record in his first season?

Only time will tell if Doug Whaley made a brilliant or ridiculous deal to acquire Watkins. Either way I admire Whaley’s commitment to his conviction, It reminds me of a young Bill Polian who made a similar blockbuster trade to obtain Cornelius Bennett.

It’s been too many years since we’ve had a GM who gets it. I think that we have one now who does.

Van was the Man as Bills’ broadcaster

Van Miller, the longtime voice of the Buffalo Bills, was given the Bills highest honor and will be inducted on the Wall of Fame. It’s a great honor for Miller who has graced us for many years with his signature calls.
