Falls man pleads guilty in motel drug case

LOCKPORT – A Niagara Falls man, one of three arrested Sept. 13 in a raid on a room in the Caravan Motel on Niagara Falls Boulevard in the Falls, pleaded guilty to a drug felony Friday in Niagara County Court.

James S. Smith, 23, of Dudley Avenue, admitted to a reduced charge of attempted fourth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance. He faces up to four years in prison when he is sentenced Aug. 14 by County Judge Matthew J. Murphy III.

Police said they found crack cocaine and a switchblade in the room. Smith’s brother, Lawrence E. Smith, 25, of Linwood Avenue, pleaded April 22 and was admitted to the judicial diversion program. Charges remain open against Robert L. Hilson, 22, of Chilton Avenue.
