Road to the NHL Draft: Sam Reinhart

Position: Center.

Junior team: Kootenay Ice (WHL).

Born: Vancouver, British Columbia.

Measurables: 6-foot-1, 185 pounds.

2013-14 stats: 60 games, 36 goals, 69 assists, 105 points.

Central Scouting rank: No. 3 (North America).

Lowdown: Reinhart followed the same drill as his brothers, Griffin and Max. He’d ask his father, Paul, what he thought of his game, and the longtime NHL defenseman would give tips and words of advice. The tradition worked because Sam Reinhart is set to join his brothers as an NHL draft pick.

The Reinharts won’t have to wait long to hear Sam get called to the stage. Ranked third by NHL Central Scouting and first by International Scouting Services, Reinhart has the skills to go No. 1 overall to Florida or second to the Sabres. He solidified his standing during the Western Hockey League playoffs with six goals and 23 points in 13 games.

Reinhart knows it’s important to play without the puck, too, and he studies film of Chicago captain Jonathan Toews in an effort to improve his two-way game.

He stays calm and was named Most Sportsmanlike Player in the WHL, which also named him Player of the Year. He has served as captain for several Canadian national teams.

He said it: “Exceptional player with the puck, his offensive hockey sense is off the charts with his vision and playmaking. A good skater whose top-end speed can still improve, a responsible player who quietly leads his team.” – Dan Marr, NHL Central Scouting. —John Vogl
