A Buffalo man with alleged ties to a band of bank robbers was sentenced Tuesday by U.S. District Judge Richard J. Arcara to 43 months in prison.
Aaron Benn, 23, had previously admitted driving the getaway car used in the July 1, 2013 robbery of M&T Bank, 1580 Hertel Ave.
Leslie Scott, an assistant federal public defender, said Benn robbed the bank because he was desperate for money to support his five children, three of them gravely ill.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Mary Catherine Baumgarten countered by reminding Arcara that Benn had previously been convicted in connection with the beating of a man in a separate incident.
The FBI, which oversaw the robbery investigation, believes Benn is part of a band of robbers that hit 26 banks over an eight-month period ending in January.
