Strong pitching dooms Herd, again, in Louisville

LOUISVILLE — For the second night in a row the Buffalo Bisons faced a starting pitcher with significant major league experience, and for the second night in a row they lost.

Chien-Ming Wang pitched eight shutout innings in a 6-0 win over the Herd on Saturday. The verdict was the same on Sunday as Mat Latos started for the Bats in what was a 5-2 Herd loss before 10,517 at Louisville Slugger Field.

The Bisons went 2 for 10 with runners in scoring position to finish just 5 for 34 in the four-game series.

It was Latos’ second injury rehab start. He threw 32 of his 49 pitches for strikes. He pitched four innings allowing two earned runs on three hits with one walk and three strikeouts.

Latos did not figure in the decision. Pedro Villarreal (1-0, 3.42) earned the win in relief. He pitched the fifth allowing no runs on no hits with a pair of walks.

Latos got into trouble in the second inning as the first two Herd runners reached base. But he induced a double play, followed by a fly out, to end the inning.

The Herd did manage to push two runs across in the fourth as the first three batters reached base. Dan Johnson singled off the wall in right to drive in Ryan Goins. Latos got another double play in the inning, but the Bisons pushed another run across the board during the play to go up, 2-0.

The Bats answered in their half of the fourth, tying the game on singles by Neftali Soto and Tucker Barnhart. They took the lead for good, at 4-2, in the fifth.

The Bisons loaded the bases in the sixth, but were unable to score.

Buffalo starter Marcus Stroman (2-4) took the loss. He allowed four runs on four hits in four innings. He threw 83 pitches, 49 for strikes. He was lifted in the fifth after the first three batters reached base.

The Bisons travel to Indianapolis tonight to start a four-game set. The Herd will start Ricky Romero (0-2, 6.07 ERA) against Adam Wilk (3-3 4.72 ERA).
