Summer operating hours began Thursday on the state’s canal system the New York State Canal Corp. announced.
As of today, all of the Erie Canal except for 45 miles in eastern New York is open for traffic. Most of the other canals in the state also are open.
Most locks and lift bridges on the system will operate on request from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily until Sept. 10. However, some high-volume locks and lift bridges, including the locks in Lockport and the Exchange Street Lift Bridge in that city, will operate on request between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m. daily.
The lift bridges in Gasport, Middleport and Medina will operate on demand from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily and on a scheduled basis from 6 to 10 p.m., the Canal Corp. said.
