YWCA historical exhibit planned

A historical exhibition that draws from the 144-year-old archives of the YWCA of Western New York will debut at an awards reception from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. today in the chapel at Forest Lawn.

“Founding Mothers: Buffalo and YWCA’s Leading Women” highlights the socially prominent women who built the YWCA in its early years. The exhibit will be shown in coming weeks at the Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural Site and the main lobby at the Larkin at Exchange building.

In conjunction with the exhibit, which is sponsored by the Baird Foundation and the Larkin Development Group, Forest Lawn has created a special trolley tour of the cemetery.

The reception also will honor six outstanding present-day women – Donna Fernandes, president and chief executive officer of the Buffalo Zoo; Erin Heaney, director of the Clean Air Coalition; Christina Orsi, regional director for Empire State Development; Stephanie Simeon, executive director of Heart of the City Neighborhoods; Dr. Janet Sung, founder of Windsong Radiology; and Gretchen Toles, former board chairwoman of the Buffalo Friends of Olmsted Parks.

Tickets are $50. For information, call 440-4152. Proceeds benefit programs for at-risk youth.
