Record number of school budgets pass

A record number of school budgets passed throughout New York State Tuesday, according to the state School Boards Association.

Voters approved 98.3 percent of budgets, according to the organization, which was still waiting to hear results from about a dozen districts statewide. The previous record adoption rate was in 2009, when 97.4 percent of budgets were adopted.

Budgets in 652 school districts were approved, while voters defeated 11 budgets Tuesday, according to the association.

“School districts received a much-deserved pat-on-the-back from voters for their efforts to trim budgets and still maintain momentum on raising academic standards for students,” said association Executive Director Timothy G. Kremer. “Low tax levy increases buoyed by a healthy state aid increase in many districts helped drive success at the polls.”

The average proposed spending increase in the 2014-15 budgets is 2.6 percent.
