One week after getting Narcan, Buffalo fire crews use it to revive overdose victim

For one victim, the Fire Department’s deployment of a powerful medication that reverses the effects of heroin overdoses happened just in time.

Fire crews responded Monday night to a call of an overdose on Seventh Street near Pennsylvania Avenue and were able to revive the victim, said Commissioner Garnell W. Whitfield Jr.

Narcan, which is administered by a nasal spray and can reverse the effects of an overdose from heroin or other opiods, went into use in the Fire Department on May 12.

The department used city funds to purchase kits equipped with two Narcan doses at a cost of between $60 and $70, Whitfield said.

The department responds to 35,000 calls per year, and most are medical emergencies, he said.
