A Buffalo man convicted of two bank robberies was sentenced Monday by U.S. District Judge Richard J. Arcara to 33 months in prison.

Jeffrey Turner, 23, previously admitted robbing the M&T Bank at 788 Tonawanda St. on June 13 and the M&T at 1580 Hertel Ave. on July 1.

Defense lawyer Matthew P. Pynn told Arcara that Turner’s robberies were a “crime of desperation" intended to keep his family from being evicted from their home.

The FBI, which oversaw the robbery investigation, believes Turner is part of a band of robbers that hit 26 banks over an eight-month period ending in January.
