BPO ‘Star-Spangled Pops’ welcomes guest conductor and singers

The Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra is continuing its season of imaginative pops conductors.

This weekend’s conductor is Jonathan Tessero. A pianist, arranger and conductor, he has a showbiz background. He has been involved with recordings with the Broadway cast of Elton John and Tim Rice’s “Aida”; the cast and orchestra of “The Phantom of the Opera”; and top session orchestras. He has been the creative director of projects including CBS’ coverage of Super Bowl XLVII, the 2013 Essence Fest headlined by Beyoncé and the relighting of the Mercedes Benz Superdome.

At Kleinhans Music Hall, Tessero will be at the helm of “Star-Spangled Pops,” a patriotic Memorial Day tradition. The concert features two visiting singers, soprano Jackie Stressman and tenor Michael Moore, who are making names for themselves. Joining them in the limelight will be the Buffalo Philharmonic Chorus, directed by Erin Freeman.

“Star-Spangled Pops” has two performances. The first, a Coffee Concert, is at 10:30 a.m. Friday. The concert repeats at 8 p.m. Saturday.

Admission is $28-$76. Call 885-5000.
