Police employee injured at safety fair

TOWN OF LOCKPORT – In an unusual twist, an employee of the Lockport Police Department was injured Friday afternoon in a golf cart accident while he was working at the Niagara Regional Traffic Safety Fair at the Cornell Cooperative Extension on Lake Avenue.

Sheriff’s deputies said that 44-year-old Mark K. Sanders was a passenger in the cart, being operated by a Lockport High School student, when the vehicle crashed into a door on the livestock building. Sanders’ head struck the building and his leg also struck an object, resulting in injuries to both. His injuries were treated in Eastern Niagara Hospital and he was discharged, deputies said.

The accident occurred when the student mistook the gas pedal for the brake on the vehicle, according to reports. No charges were filed.
