LOCKPORT – There is no firm date for the opening of the restored 19th century Erie Canal locks, the chairman of the Lockport Locks Heritage District Committee said Monday.

David R. Kinyon said, “It’s highly unlikely that it’s going to happen on the Fourth of July weekend.” That was the tentative date chosen last month, but Kinyon said Hohl Industrial Services, the contractor on the $1.74 million restoration job, has a great deal of masonry work to do before the white oak gates placed in the locks last week can be connected to the stone frames.

Kinyon said it’s possible that the two of the Flight of Five locks that are being restored to working condition may not open until August.
