Canisius hires hockey assistants

A former player and a veteran of Atlantic Hockey have been named assistant coaches for the Canisius College hockey program.

Scott Moser, who played for the Golden Griffins from 2008-12, and Trevor Large, most recently an assistant at Army, join Dave Smith’s staff for the upcoming season.

Large spent the last six seasons at Army as the program’s assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. Before that he spent two seasons at American International. He played four seasons at Ferris State (2000-04) and helped the Bulldogs to their first NCAA tournament appearance in 2003.

“Over the last several years, I have watched the stellar job that Coach Smith has done and how hard his team has played,” Large said in the school’s release. “As an assistant coach of a competing school, the success has been tough to watch. I now can’t wait to get started and assist in those efforts of building a team that consistently competes for league championships.”

Moser played in 134 games for the Griffs and was the team’s captain for the 2011-12 season. He finished with 50 points (23 goals and 36 assists) winning the Dr. David B. Dietz Award for athletic and scholastic dedication twice. He was also a four-year member of the golf team.

Moser, a Tonawanda native and graduate of Kenmore West, spent last season as the director of hockey operations for the St. Lawrence women’s team.

“I’m extremely excited to be back at Canisius,” Moser said. “To be coaching Division I hockey in my hometown is an opportunity I’m very thankful for. It’s great to see how much this program has grown over the years and I’m looking forward to being part of a new era of Griffs Hockey at HarborCenter.”

Canisius, which went to its first NCAA tournament after winning the Atlantic Hockey title in 2013 and advanced to the conference title game this year, will move into the new HarborCenter downtown this season.
