Bison bats big again in second straight win

The Buffalo Bisons found more offense on Monday to earn their second straight win over the Lehigh Valley IronPigs.

A Victoria Day afternoon special in front of 5,321 at Coca-Cola Field saw the Herd win, 8-4, after a 7-1 win on Sunday.

The Bisons began its offensive day by scoring in the first. Darin Mastroianni led off with a single, stole second and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt form Ryan Goins. A sacrifice to right by Dan Johnson allowed Mastroianni to score for a 1-0 Herd lead.

A two-out walk came back to hurt Jenkins as Leandro Castro drilled the first pitch to right field for a two-run home run and 2-1 Lehigh Valley lead.

The Bisons tied the game in the fifth. Jonathan Diaz drew a one-out walk followed by back-to-back hits from Mastroianni and Ryan Goins.

With two outs, Dan Johnson was hit in the hands to load the bases and Brad Glenn blasted a shot over the centerfielder’s head to clear the bases and give the Herd a 5-2 lead.

The IronPigs got to reliever Ryan Rowland-Smith in the sixth as back-to-back solo home runs to left from Maikel Franco and Darin Ruf cut the lead to 5-4.

The Bisons got some breathing room in the sixth when a walk, hit-by-pitch and single loaded the bases with one out. Goins hit to second and reached on a fielder’s choice as Mastroianni broke up the double play attempt with his slide. The run scored to give the Herd a 6-4 lead.

Goins took second on a wild pitch and a single from Jared Goedert scored two more runs for the Herd.

Rowland-Smith picked up his fist win with the Herd. He was on Arizona’s Opening Day roster and elected free agency when he was designated for assignment on April 18. He gave up two runs on two hits with two strikeouts in 2-1/3 innings.

The series concludes at 1:05 p.m. today with Marcus Stroman, recently optioned back to Buffalo from Toronto, scheduled to start for the Herd.
