Where we live: Lackawanna

Middle school students will celebrate “Steeler Service Day” on Thursday with free family programs and an art display at Lackawanna Public Library, 560 Ridge Road.

The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., when 28 seventh- and eighth-grade students – representing two classes from the middle school – will distribute tote bags containing new books to the community.

Students will host a story time, decorate alphabet cookies and make bookmarks. Some also will create and display their own artwork, inspired by storybook characters.

All activities are free and open to the public.

Conceived by Jennifer Willats, a middle school special education teacher, art teacher Melissa Markiewicz and library director Jennifer Johnston, the goal of the project is to encourage students to become active in their community, take pride in their work and promote reading.

Also this week:

• A City Council meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. Monday in Council Chambers at City Hall, 714 Ridge Road.

• The School Board will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Superintendent’s Conference Room [Room 202] at the Administration Building, 245 South Shore Blvd., to certify election results from Tuesday.
