Hamburg board changes tune on parking at the high school

Hamburg School Board members have changed their thinking on creating a new parking area off North Street at the high school.

Adding parking at the high school to ease the crunch on side streets is a part of the capital project that was approved several years ago, said Director of Administration Barbara Sporyz.

North Street residents raised concerns about a loss of trees and green space when they saw construction fences erected at the school, but Sporyz said construction was halted before it began after residents spoke to the School Board.

Creating a parking area along North Street was the top option of a committee that examined the issue, she said. It would add 44 student parking spaces, alleviate the parking issues along North and would not add to traffic on Division Street. It remains the administration’s recommendation, she said.

But board members last week said they prefer making a parking area out of a recently renovated staging area at the west wing of the building. The area could accommodate 34 cars, although eight to 10 cars park there already, Sporyz said. The area would be reserved for teachers, and would be accessed from Division Street, she said.

Making it a teacher’s lot would free up spots in the main lot for students, she said.
