Book includes local toy wagons

A recently released book on vintage toy wagons includes a chapter on North Tonawanda’s Buffalo Sled/Auto Wheel Coaster Co. The book was provided to the North Tonawanda History Museum for its reference library after the author turned to the History Museum to gather information for his book.

Gordon Westover, of Sacramento, Calif., is the author of “Coasting on Wheels: Vintage Toy Wagons.” Gordon contacted the North Tonawanda History Museum in 2010 for information on his book and had promised a copy of his completed book.

The book includes three photos from the museum collection.

One is a colored advertising blotter from 1915, when the company was using both names; the second is a photo of employees of Buffalo Sled Co. on Oct. 20, 1917, in front of the factory; and the third is a 1920 photo of youngsters with their Auto Wheel Coaster wagons and beanies provided by the Buffalo Sled Co. in front of the Benjamin Long Rand home at 257 Goundry St. Rand was the mayor of North Tonawanda from 1915 to 1918.

Auto Wheel Coaster began in Buffalo in 1889 as the Buffalo Sled Co. and relocated to North Tonawanda in 1904. The company went bankrupt in 1968, and a fire destroyed the complex May 31, 1972.

The 235-page book is published by Tate Publishing and Enterprises, and it retails for $63.99.
