Buffalo Police Department shuts down Molly’s

A University Heights bar that was the scene of a brutal assault last weekend has been shut down by the Buffalo Police Department.

Molly’s Pub, 3199 Main St., has been shut down temporarily under a provision in city law that allows the Police Department to close bars in case of emergency, Chief of Detectives Dennis Richards said today.

Two police officers, who have not been identified by the department, have also been placed on paid administrative leave.

It is believed that two off-duty officers witnessed the attack on William C. Sager Jr., an Air National Guardsman. The officers are thought to have worked security outside the bar and then went inside the bar when their shifts ended.

Sager is being treated for a serious brain injury at Erie County Medical Center. His chances of recovery are believed to be poor.

The beating is being investigated by the FBI, city homicide detectives and internal affairs investigators.
