Holiday Valley bike trail at stake in online contest

You don’t have to pedal a bicycle to help Holiday Valley win a grant toward a mountain bike trail network – a simple tap of your index finger will do.

The Ellicottville resort is among four East Coast finalists competing in “Bell Built,” an online contest in which the winner will receive a $33,000 grant from Bell Helmets. The company already has awarded grants in the West Coast and Central regions as part of its $100,000 giveaway.

The Western New York Mountain Biking Association is sponsoring the two-mile flow trail at Holiday Valley, which would run from the summit of the ski area to the lodge near Sky High Adventure Park. It would be the first phase of a larger program to develop more trails to complement the existing trail network in the adjacent state forest.

Holiday Valley also will provide personnel and equipment, significantly boosting the value of the grant, according to Jim Allen, president of the mountain biking association. The trail will be a multi-use trail, open to hikers and bikers of all ages and fitness levels, he noted.

Richmond Regional Ride Center in Virginia is Holiday Valley’s chief competition, Allen said.

“This is free money ,” Allen said. “The grant funds will either go to Virginia or to Western New York.”

“This is a popularity contest – we need votes, plain and simple,” he said.

Voting ends Sunday, with the winner to be announced Monday. Vote at
