Flash flood watch issued for Thursday to Friday

Scattered rain and thundershowers are forecast today in Western New York, which isn’t good news for Gowanda and Silver Creek, hit by flooding Tuesday. The news, however is worse for Thursday and Friday.

A flash flood watch along rivers and creeks has been issued from 2 p.m. Thursday through Friday afternoon for Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Genesee, Niagara, northern and southern Erie, Orleans and Wyoming counties.

“We do have a slight risk area for severe weather this afternoon in western parts of New York. There is the potential of thunderstorms that are scattered in nature, with a lot of rain in a very short time,” meteorologist Jim Mitchell of the National Weather Service said. High winds and hail are a possibility, too.

A slow-moving cold front from the west is expected to produce widespread heavy rain and thunderstorms.

“This will be our highest threat for any flooding, especially because it will be widespread,” Mitchell said. “The ground is already saturated, and everywhere has had rain, so flooding after today will be the main player as we go down the road.”
